The ABCs of living together: between marriage and de facto union

Interactive workshop involving two scenarios of a couple in the context of family breakup, aimed at contrasting conceptions of marriage and de facto union. The aim of this conference is to demystify the legal aspects of life as a couple by addressing the themes of sharing financial responsibilities and assets, as well as the usefulness and distinctions between marriage contracts and cohabitation contracts.

Opening a protective regime: distinctions applicable in the presence or absence of a mandate in anticipation of incapacity

Conference designed to explain the concepts applicable in the event of incapacity or loss of autonomy of a loved one. We will examine the distinctions between the new protective regimes (assistance measures, temporary representation, guardianship) as well as the criteria that may give rise to these regimes since the coming into force of a new law on November 1, 2022. Finally, we will attempt to define the broad outlines surrounding the use of protective mandates and/or powers of attorney, and the associated dangers, by means of case studies.

Elders' rights: relations with grandchildren, accommodation and certain contracts

An informative workshop on the rights of seniors as a whole. We look at the family aspects of grandparent-grandchild relationships, and examine existing forms of protection for our elders, such as housing, care and abuse.

Demystifying family mediation

The aim of this presentation is to demystify conceptions of family mediation through practical examples and true/false facts, since, no, family mediation is not a form of couple therapy. We hope to answer the most frequently asked questions about costs, usefulness, success rates, confidentiality and limitations.

Going to Small Claims Court on your own

An interactive workshop in which we review the basics of the content of a demand letter, which is necessary before filing a lawsuit, and stage a mock trial in Small Claims Court. We also review the most important civil legal concepts to keep in mind before initiating proceedings (prescription, burden of proof, damages, etc.).

Life for two in today's real estate market

In the life of a couple, the purchase of a property is usually a happy event, but also a stressful one, requiring many decisions to be made, given the importance of this investment. You should be aware that your marital status (married or common-law) and even the time in your life when the purchase is made (before or during marriage) can have an impact on the value you receive. To leave nothing to chance, we’ll look at a few examples of interesting clauses to include (or not) in your deeds of purchase, as well as the relevance of a marriage contract and/or undivided ownership agreement.

Legal workshop for social workers

This workshop is designed to provide tools for practitioners supporting parents whose family situation is before the courts, either before the Family Division or the Youth Division – and sometimes, incidentally, before the Criminal Court. This interactive presentation will first identify the distinctions between proceedings before these two bodies, and provide some food for thought on intervention methods and their impact on the judicial process. The concepts of child custody and child support will also be explored, particularly in light of the themes of abandonment and parental conflict. Finally, an overview of legal information resources will complete this training program, which is designed to bring together the worlds of intervention and law.

Estate settlements, with or without a will

Interactive conference where you’ll be asked to test your knowledge of estates. We’ll explore the rights of heirs under different types of wills and testamentary clauses, look at the various stages involved in settling an estate, and examine the role of the liquidator, formerly known as the executor.
