Adopting an adult
Did you know you could adopt an adult?
Jessica is currently 26 years old.
Jessica’s parents separated when she was 2.
After the separation, Jessica’s mother was given custody and her father was given access rights, which he didn’t always exercise.
In recent years, she has had only sporadic contact with her father.
From the age of 3 to 16, Jessica lived with her mother and her new partner, Robert.
However, after her mother separated from Robert, Jessica continued to see him regularly.
Robert has no children of his own and considers Jessica his daughter.
Jessica also considers Robert to be her real father.
Did you know that it’s possible to adopt an adult?
It will be possible for Robert to adopt Jessica, even if Jessica’s father is still alive.
All that’s required is proof that the adopter (Robert) has been a parental figure to the child and has cared for her for several years.
Of course, Jessica’s consent will be required.
After the adoption, Jessica will have a birth certificate in which her mother’s name will appear under mother and Robert’s name under father.
If, by some misfortune, Robert were to die before beginning his adoption application, the adoption would not be possible, as it could not be requested by Jessica.
If you are in one of these situations and wish to put a de facto situation into practice, you should consult a lawyer…
